Mixed Bag For Mississippi Sports Betting To End 2023
Fact Checked by Jim Tomlin

The final month of 2023 delivered a mixed bag of results for sportsbook and casino operators in the Magnolia State, with a 21.7% month-over-month drop in Mississippi sports betting handle offset by a 57.5% jump in revenue.

Overall, Mississippi sportsbooks took in $48,888,089 in sports betting handle, or amount wagered, in December, a 21.7% decline from November’s total of $62,412,735, according to the Mississippi Gaming Commission. That final month pushed the state’s 2023 total handle to $474,275,132 — bucking the nationwide trend of record handles — that was a 10.8% decrease in a year-over-year comparison with 2022 ($531,951,768). That reflects the lack of a true Mississippi online sports betting market; customers wishing to use mobile devices to place bets can only do so at the physical casinos.

As far as wagering revenues were concerned, December’s total of $4,886,771 was up 57.5% from November ($3,103,061), giving the state a total of $51,224,140 for 2023. That total for the year was down 15.8% from 2022’s sum of $60,816,325, putting a sour final note on the year-end data for sportsbooks in Mississippi.
